Melvin Hirshman, Esq., a 35-year resident of Annapolis, succumbed to Lymphoma on September 11, 2017 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Born in Washington, D.C. on September 24, 1931, Mel was a graduate of American University and its Washington College of Law. Following his graduation from law school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He practiced law for over 60 years, beginning in private practice in Washington, D.C. and Adelphi, MD for 25 years. In 1981, he was appointed Chief Disciplinary Counsel for the State by the Court of Appeals of Maryland and for 30 years proudly led what was considered one of the leading attorney discipline offices in the nation. After retirement from the Attorney Grievance Commission, he enjoyed a boutique practice as an expert witness in ethics.

He was a member of bar associations in Anne Arundel County, Maryland State, DC Bar, and the American Bar. He was on the editorial board of the BNA Lawyers’ Professional Manual since its inception, and a former president of the National Association of Bar Counsel.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 47 years, Nancy, his children Tiffany, Jeff, Bob and Kim, and blended family of 8 grandchildren. Also surviving is his cousin, Ruth Binn, and her family.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13th, at Kneseth Israel Congregation, Annapolis, with burial following at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
